For Men

Ideal Weight for Men

A men-specific breakdown of ideal weight by height, plus the factors — muscle mass, age and frame size — that shift the number for men specifically.

Male ideal-weight formulas assume a slightly higher baseline lean mass than female formulas, reflecting average differences in muscle and bone density. Here's the medium-frame ideal weight for men at common heights, with the small-to-large frame range alongside it.

Ideal weight for men by height, with frame range
HeightFrame Range (Small–Large)Medium Frame
160 cm (5'3")52.0–63.5 kg57.8 kg
165 cm (5'5")55.7–68.0 kg61.9 kg
170 cm (5'7")59.4–72.5 kg65.9 kg
175 cm (5'9")63.0–77.0 kg70.0 kg
180 cm (5'11")66.7–81.5 kg74.1 kg
185 cm (6'1")70.4–86.0 kg78.2 kg

Range reflects the ±10% small-to-large frame adjustment applied to the 4-formula average.

Factors that matter more for men

Muscle mass

Men typically carry a higher percentage of lean muscle mass than these decades-old formulas assume. A muscular, low-body-fat man can weigh well above his "ideal weight" figure and still be lean and healthy — the number is a population average, not a ceiling.

Age

Muscle mass tends to decline gradually after the mid-30s unless actively maintained through resistance training, which can shift the healthy weight for older men slightly lower relative to these formulas.

Frame size

Frame size, estimated from wrist circumference relative to height, typically has a larger absolute effect on men's ideal weight because male ideal-weight baselines are higher to begin with.

Athletic build? If you train regularly and carry visible muscle, treat this number as a loose reference rather than a target — body fat percentage is usually a more meaningful health marker for you than weight alone.

Formula Average

Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi combined for a male baseline.

Frame-Adjusted

±10% for small or large wrist-to-height ratio.

Muscle-Aware Context

Read alongside body fat %, not weight alone, if you train.
